What are ganglion cysts?

Ganglion cysts are fluid-filled growths that develop under the surface of your skin near joints. They can develop when there’s a tear in the tissue that covers your joints and tendons. Most often, they develop on the wrist, fingers, or feet. 

You may be at an increased risk of developing a ganglion cyst if you’re:

• A woman
• Between ages 20 and 40
• Have osteoarthritis in your fingers
• Have had a joint or tendon injury

Ganglion cysts are one of the most common types of noncancerous growths that develop on soft tissue. Experts aren’t sure why they develop, but they may be more likely to appear after joint or tendon injuries. 

What do ganglion cysts feel like?

Depending on the size of a ganglion cyst, you may or may not be able to see a visible lump, but you can still experience symptoms like pain. Some ganglion cysts aren’t painful and don’t cause any issues. 

Ganglion cysts can range in size and may grow larger over time. They can also be different shapes, with some being perfectly round and others being more oval. The lump is usually firm (but can be soft in some cases) and moves easily under your skin. 

Ganglion cysts can cause additional symptoms if they put pressure on nerves in the area. You might feel tenderness or pain in your muscle, experience tingling, or even have muscle weakness. However, most ganglion cysts are painless.
